sustainability & community engagement at Coffeebar

During my time at Coffeebar, I gained invaluable insights into sustainability and its profound impact on every aspect of life and business. As both a marketer and a roaster, I was privileged to contribute to initiatives that aligned with Coffeebar's commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

In 2024, I played a key role in organizing and executing a series of sustainability-focused projects during Earth Week, aimed at fostering awareness and collective action. This involved meaningful partnerships with like-minded organizations, including Okapi Reusables, the National Forest Foundation, and De la Gente, each bringing unique expertise and passion to our efforts.

Our initiatives included:

  • Collaborating with Okapi Reusables to reduce single-use waste by integrating their products into our coffee operations and encouraging customers to adopt more sustainable habits.

  • Partnering with the National Forest Foundation to host community panels focused on reforestation efforts and the environmental impact of single-use foodware. These panels sparked vital conversations about how small actions can create lasting environmental change.

  • Partnering with De la Gente, a nonprofit working with coffee farming communities, to spotlight ethical sourcing and share stories of impact from the origin level.

These experiences taught me the power of collaboration and how businesses can drive positive change by weaving sustainability into their core values. The success of these initiatives reaffirmed my belief in the importance of creating meaningful connections between businesses, communities, and the environment.

the report

the trip

At the end of 2023, Coffeebar flew a group of us to Guatemala to visit De la Gente and its cooperatives. This immersive trip allowed us to connect directly with the farmers who cultivate the coffee that fills our cups each day. We engaged in meaningful discussions about contracts, shared knowledge to support crop improvement, and witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs of coffee production. One of the most impactful outcomes of this visit was Coffeebar’s donation of moisture meters to the cooperative La Suiza, a vital tool to enhance the quality and consistency of their lots.
